Enabling the Insight Module

The Insight module allows you to collect statistics from the devices that are managed by AppViewX. Also, it displays historical statistics on demand for users.

Install Insight for Statistics Collection

To install Insight for statistics collection:

  1. Open the terminal and navigate to /home/appviewx/appviewx_kubernetes/yaml directory.
  2. Download the appviewx_kubernetes_insight_<AVX_VERSION>.tar.gz file.
  3. Extract the contents of the file: 
    tar -xvf appviewx_kubernetes_insight_<AVX_VERSION>.tar.gz
  4. Navigate to /home/appviewx/appviewx_kubernetes/scripts directory.
  5. Open the appviewx.conf file: 
    vi appviewx.conf
  6. Set the following parameters:
    • INSIGHT=TRUE
    • ELASTICSEARCH_BACKUP_HOST=<node1-hostname>,<node2-hostname>
    • ELASTIC_BACKUP_PATH=<path> (example: /home/appviewx/elastic_backup)
  7. Search for Enabled Plugins and add the following plugins:
    • appviewx_dependencies
    • avx_insight_subsystem_adc
    • avx_insight_statistics_bot
    • avx_platform_gateway
  8. Update the datacenter for Insight plugins as shown in the image below.
  9. Save and exit appviewx.conf.
  10. Navigate to /home/appviewx/appviewx_kubernetes/scripts directory and install Insight: 
    ./insight_install.sh
  11. Install the plugins: 
    ./plugins_install.sh
  12. Restart subsystems and vendors: 
    kubectl delete pods <Pod name> -n <datacenter name>

    For example:

    kubectl delete pods avx-insight-statistics-bot-<pod-id> -n <datacenter-name>
  13. For Insight migration, continue only up to step 11.
  14. View the elasticsearch-insight service: 
    kubectl get service elasticsearch-insight -n statistics
  15. Update the service and set nodePort to 31403: 
    kubectl edit service elasticsearch-insight -n statistics
  16. Connect to the elastic database: 
    kubectl get services -n statistics

Device Syslog Process

The Syslog module receives syslogs from managed devices and updates the AppViewX database accordingly.

  1. Open appviewx.conf and set SYSLOG=TRUE.
  2. Add the following to ENABLED_PLUGINS: appviewx_dependencies,avx_platform_syslog,avx_platform_gateway.
  3. Set the syslog assignment: avx_platform_syslog=syslog.
  4. Save appviewx.conf.
  5. From the scripts directory, run the below command.
    ./insight_install.sh
  6. Retrieve the syslog port.
    kubectl get services -n syslog
# Fetch the NodePort from the logstash-syslog-service entry.
  7. In MongoDB, open avx_app_metadata collection and set SYSLOG_RECEIVER_ENABLED=TRUE.
  8. Update the ConfigMap for the datacenter namespace.
    kubectl edit configmaps -n <DATACENTER_NAME>
# Set: SYSLOG_RECEIVER_ENABLED=True, SYSLOG_HOST=<SYSLOG_NODE_IP>, SYSLOG_PORT=<PORT>
  9. Restart subsystems and vendors pods.
    kubectl delete pods <avx-subsystems-pod> <avx-vendors-pod> -n <DATACENTER_NAME>
